The Australian Performing Arts Market is rolling into Adelaide on February 22, and we’re packing our bags, hitting the road, and setting up the MILKE booth right in the middle of all the action. APAM sees more than 400 of the most important performing arts producers and presenters gather under one roof, network, get creative and make stuff happen. So we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty in the big sandpit of artists, producers, companies, government and cultural organisations who all come together to take the pulse of the Australian performing arts scene and propel it into its future. The Milke booth will be showcased at the APAM and are very excited about promoting our artists and shows to presenters, festivals and companies from all around the world. If you’re going to be at APAM, Adelaide Fringe or the Adelaide Festival between 22-26 February, make sure you pop by, say hi and check out what we’re up to this year!

2010 (it sounds like the future)

Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back. Thank you. MILKE is back in the office for 2010 and we gotta say, we have a good feeling about this year. We like the sound of it - 2010….it’s like the future and much easier to say than 2009.

We have lots on the go and looking forward to telling you about the projects and shows we are working on. To keep in touch on a regular basis - why not sign up and subscribe to MILKE. It’s easy to do - just look to the right of this page, pop in your name and email address and Bob’s your uncle. (well maybe or is it Collin? Brian?) By signing up with MILKE - you also get the chance to snaffle some great tickets for shows in Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. Noice!

MILKE Christmas/New Year Hours

As one year ends and a new one begins, the MILKE office will be taking a little break. We will be closed from 5pm Friday 18 December to 10am Wednesday 13th January 2010. Thank you for all your support this year and we look forward to another big one in 2010.

Really? How did it become November so soon? It’s like I don’t know how a calender works sometimes! MILKE is a busy bee planning for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for 2010 right now. I know…it will be here before you know it. It’s been a busy couple of month with the Melbourne Fringe Festival and a hugely successful season programmed and produced by MILKE at The Store Room, add to that a trip to Singapore and Hong Kong and we are almost ready to call it a year.

MILKE is producing the next production to hit The Store Room stage in North Fitzroy. CHESAPEAKE is a magical tale about a bisexual performance artist from New York, a conservative Southern politician and a god that unites their fates forever. It’s a one-man play about the role of the arts and roll in the dirt. Written by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright Lee Blessing. The plays stars Alan Brough and is directed by Todd MacDonald. Details below.

STRANGERS IN BETWEEN by Tommy Murphy

From playwright Tommy Murphy (Holding the Man) and director Ben Packer (Mercury Fur), comes a surprising and tender play about accepting the kindness of strangers.

“The best new australian play since Michael Gow’s Away” SX

Strangers in Between‘s original production in 2005 in Sydney launched playwright Tommy Murphy’s stellar rise. The Sydney Morning Herald called the play “bitter and sweet and replete with raw emotion … entertaining and forceful”. SX News went a step further and claimed it to be “the best new Australian play since Michael Gow’s Away”. Strangers in Between won the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Best Play in 2006 and Murphy went on to adapt Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding the Man for the stage.

little death productions is an independent theatre company that seeks to present work that is vital and visceral. The company presented Mercury Fur by Philip Ridley in 2007 at Theatreworks before touring the production to Sydney as part of Griffin Stablemates. Critic for The Australian and theatre blogger Alison Croggon proclaimed the production as “quite simply, brilliant theatre”.

Can you believe it’s almost the middle of the year. Where oh where does the time go? MILKE knows, as we have been busy as a bee, producing shows including comedy and theatre during April/May.

Firstly, a big congratulations to two shows MILKE was working on for their comedy award nomiations during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival...Asher Treleavan Open Door - nominated for a Barry Award and Wes Snelling for Kiosk - nominated for a Golden Gibbo Award.

MILKE was also working on the world premiere of Cafe Rebetika at the Fairfax Theatre at the Arts Centre. Written and Directed by Stephen Helper and presented by The Arts Centre through it’s Mix It Up and Full Tilt Programs.

Café Rebetika is an ambitious undertaking: a play about the Greek Blues (rebetika), set in the 1930s, combining cabaret, theatre, music and dance, but it isn’t a musical….If anything, Café Rebetika is a drama, and a drama in the truest sense of the word: it is a comedy and a tragedy both, and it’s extremely good.
