ARtist Management
★★★★ "Damien Warren-Smith’s alter ego delivers a drama masterclass, leading us from clownish chaos to feats of comic genius" - The Guardian
Garry Starr is produced and performed by Damien Warren-Smith.
Having struggled for much of his life to stick at anything, Damien discovered there was much hilarity to be found (for everyone besides himself and his long-suffering Mother) in attempting to do everything at once for the sake of art. Thus, Garry Starr Performs Everything was born.
The show was directed by Cal McCrystal (Paddington 1&2, The Mighty Boosh, The Amazing Spider-man) and premiered at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in 2018 where it picked up two awards and critical acclaim before transferring to the Malthouse Theatre for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Here Damien was nominated for both Best Newcomer and the Golden Gibbo (Best Independent Artist).
The show then headed to the UK where it collected a string of awards at Brighton Fringe Festival (Balkan/Otherplace Award and Best Comedy nominee), Buxton Fringe Festival (Theatre Award nominee), Greater Manchester Fringe Festival (Best Comedy), and the world’s largest arts festival, the Edinburgh Fringe where it sold out for 25 consecutive nights (including 2 additional late night performances) and gained critical acclaim from some of the UK’s biggest publications.
Following Edinburgh the show transferred to London’s Soho Theatre, one of the world’s most respected venues for independent comedy where it sold out and once again drew the attention of industry and the national press.
In 2019 the show toured nationally around Australia and NZ taking in Christchurch, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Wellington, Brisbane and various regional areas, before returning to Europe and playing international festivals in Berlin, Orkney and Oslo.
Following the success of Garry Starr Performs Everything Damien once again teamed up with director Cal McCrystal to create the role of Reverend Peabody in the Atomic Saloon Show which thrilled audiences in Edinburgh once again before taking up residence at The Venetian in Las Vegas.
When the pandemic struck Damien returned to Australia and whilst locked away in Melbourne he gave birth to a new solo show Garry Starr: Greece Lightning in which he attempts to perform all of Greek Mythology in order to save his Hellenic homeland from economic ruin.
★★★★ “Over far too soon, this calling card of a solo debut from Warren-Smith leaves you hoping to see much more of Starr” – The Scotsman
★★★★ “A masterclass in silliness” – Fest Mag
★★★★★ “An anarchic play-date with a six-foot-two toddler with a mop of fuzzy hair, no inhibitions and far too much raspberry cordial on board. It’s an exhilarating feeling” – GLAM Adelaide
